Australia: Early general elections set for May 3

Melbourne (Australia), Mar 27 (LaPresse/AP) – The date for Australia’s early general elections has been set: voters will head to the polls on May 3. The announcement was made by Labor Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who is seeking a second term but is facing declining support due to high living costs and a worsening housing crisis in the country.

No Australian government has failed to secure re-election after a single term since 1931. However, governments in Australia typically lose ground in their second election, and the Labor Party currently holds only 77 of the 151 seats in the House of Representatives.

The conservative coalition led by opposition leader Peter Dutton is expected to increase its representation in the House. Polls also suggest that a minority government, supported by independent politicians or smaller parties, is the most likely outcome.
