Tariffs, Trump: "I’m considering a temporary exemption on car duties"

Washington (USA), April 15 (LaPresse) – President Donald Trump suggested that he might temporarily exempt the automotive industry from the tariffs he had previously imposed on the sector, in order to give car manufacturers time to reorganize their supply chains.

"I'm considering something to help some of the carmakers with this," Trump said to reporters gathered in the Oval Office. The president stated that car manufacturers need time to move production from Canada, Mexico, and other countries.

“They will produce here, but it takes a bit of time,” he explained.

Matt Blunt, president of the American Automotive Policy Council, an association representing Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis, said that the group shares Trump’s goals of increasing domestic production.

“There is a growing awareness that broad tariffs on components could jeopardize our shared goal of building a prosperous and growing American automotive industry, and that many of these supply chain transitions will take time,” he stated.

When Trump announced the 25% tariffs on the automotive industry on March 27, he called them “permanent.”
