London (United Kingdom), 19 April (LaPresse/AP) – Thousands of trans rights protesters gathered in central London on Saturday afternoon, just days after the UK Supreme Court ruled that a woman is defined as a person who was biologically female at birth and that transgender women are excluded from this legal definition. With growing concern about the implications of this ruling on the rights of transgender people, protesters gathered on Saturday for what was described as an ‘emergency demonstration’ in Parliament Square. Transgender groups fear that Wednesday's landmark decision could undermine their rights, even though the UK's highest court said transgender people continue to be protected from discrimination. The chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission said the ruling would mean transgender women would be excluded from women's toilets, hospital wards and sports teams.
