USA, former Republican Congressman George Santos sentenced to 7 years

Washington (USA), April 25 (LaPresse) – Former Republican Congressman from New York, George Santos, has been sentenced to seven years and three months in prison, following a case that began over two years ago with the discovery of a series of falsehoods in his résumé, which ultimately led to a criminal investigation over financial irregularities. Santos, the first openly gay Congressman in the Republican Party, was expelled from Congress in December 2023 with a bipartisan vote. As part of a plea deal with the prosecution, Santos was sentenced after admitting to presenting false financial reports for his election campaign, charging donors’ credit cards without authorization, and fraudulently benefiting from unemployment benefits.
