Milan, 17 June (LaPresse) – US intelligence believes that, before Israel launched its massive attack on Iran on Friday, Tehran was not actively pursuing the construction of a nuclear weapon. This was reported by CNN, citing four people familiar with the assessment. The broadcaster adds that, according to US intelligence, Iran was three years away from being able to produce one and launch it at a target of its choice. Now, after days of Israeli air strikes, according to a US source also cited by CNN, US intelligence officials believe that Israel may have delayed Iran's nuclear programme by only a few months. Although Israel caused significant damage to Iran's Natanz facility, the heavily fortified Fordo enrichment site remained largely intact and, according to defence experts, Israel does not have the capability to damage Fordo without specific weapons and US air support, CNN points out.
