Milan, 27 June (LaPresse) – One of the two criminals involved in the kidnapping that gave the world the expression “Stockholm syndrome” has died at the age of 78. The announcement was made by his family and reported by the BBC. Clark Olofsson, who became world famous in 1973 following a kidnapping and bank robbery in the Swedish capital, died after a long illness, according to his family's statement to the Swedish newspaper Dagens Etc. During a six-day hostage situation, Olofsson's hostages began to sympathise with him and his accomplice, defending their actions and becoming increasingly hostile towards the police outside. The incident gave its name to a psychological condition theorised whereby kidnapping victims develop affection for their captors.
