The Dalai Lama turns 90

Milan, 6 July (LaPresse) – The Dalai Lama celebrates his 90th birthday today. ‘So far, I have been able to serve the Buddha Dharma and the people of Tibet quite well, and I hope to live more than 130 years,’ he said yesterday during a ceremony in the northern Indian town of Dharamshala, organised by his followers to pray for his long life. He had previously told his followers, who were concerned about his health, that he could live to be 110. Dharamshala has been the Dalai Lama's residence in exile since 1959, when he fled Tibet following a failed uprising against Chinese rule. Since then, he has championed Tibet's aspirations for greater autonomy under Chinese Communist Party rule and mobilised Tibetans inside and outside China.
