Middle East, 23 countries including Italy: ‘Israel's refusal to provide aid to civilians in Gaza is unacceptable’

Milan, 21 July. (LaPresse) – ‘The Israeli government's refusal to provide essential humanitarian assistance to the civilian population is unacceptable. Israel must comply with its obligations under international humanitarian law.’ This is stated in a declaration on Gaza signed by the foreign ministers of 23 countries, including Italy, and the EU Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management. The text, also signed by Antonio Tajani, bears the signatures of the heads of diplomacy of Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. 'The suffering of civilians in Gaza has reached unprecedented levels. The aid delivery model adopted by the Israeli government is dangerous, fuels instability and deprives the people of Gaza of their human dignity. We condemn the trickle of aid and the inhumane killing of civilians, including children, who are trying to meet their most basic needs, such as water and food. It is appalling that more than 800 Palestinians have been killed while seeking aid,‘ the statement said, calling on ’the Israeli government to immediately lift restrictions on the flow of aid and to urgently allow the United Nations and humanitarian NGOs to carry out their life-saving work safely and effectively."
