Rome, July 27 (LaPresse) – "The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, in agreement with the Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, has appointed Luigi Vignali, the Director-General for Italians Abroad, as the Special Envoy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Italian detainees in Venezuela." This was reported in a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Since November 15, 2024, Italian aid worker Alberto Trentini has been detained in Venezuela. In an interview with the newspaper Avvenire published today, Tajani was asked whether it is reasonable to have hopes for Trentini’s release. He responded: "We are following the case, we have received recent information, and he is in good condition. We have to deal with a regime that has many political prisoners. There are 14-15 other Italians in their prisons."
