Prominent Al Jazeera reporter killed in Gaza

Cairo (Egypt), Aug. 10 (LaPresse/AP) – The Al Jazeera television network has announced that its correspondent Anas al-Sharif was killed in Gaza City. The Israeli army confirmed the news. The broadcaster, citing the director of Gaza City’s Shifa Hospital, reported that al-Sharif and other journalists from his crew were killed in their tent. In a statement, the Israeli army claimed that al-Sharif was “posing as a journalist” but was in fact a member of Hamas’s military wing. Last month, the Committee to Protect Journalists expressed serious concern for al-Sharif’s safety, describing him as “the target of a smear campaign by the Israeli army.”
