Ukraine, London: ‘Ready to send troops if Moscow agrees to ceasefire’

Milan, 15 August (LaPresse) – The United Kingdom is ready to send troops to Ukraine if Russia agrees to a ceasefire after the summit in Alaska. This was stated by British Defence Minister John Healey in an interview with the BBC, using the expression “put boots on the ground”, which is used to refer to the deployment of military forces. ‘We are ready to put British boots on the ground in Ukraine, partly to reassure the Ukrainians,’ Healey told the BBC, ‘but also partly to ensure the security of the skies and seas and to reinforce Ukrainian forces, because ultimately the best deterrent against Russia, against the resumption of its aggression against Ukraine, is Ukraine's strength to defend itself.’. When asked what would happen if Russia attacked British soldiers while they were in Ukraine, Healey replied that she did not intend to speak in hypotheticals, but added that there were ‘important principles’ and that British forces would have ‘the right to defend themselves if attacked.’ Healey added that she hopes the Trump-Putin summit in Alaska could be ‘the first step towards serious negotiations’ and towards peace in Ukraine. Yesterday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited London on Thursday to meet with British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.
