USA, CPI: ‘Sanctions are a flagrant attack on our independence’

Turin, Aug 20 (LaPresse) – The International Criminal Court “deplores the announcement of new sanctions by the U.S. administration against judges Kimberly Prost (Canada), Nicolas Guillou (France), Deputy Prosecutor Nazhat Shameem Khan (Fiji), and Deputy Prosecutor Mame Mandiaye Niang (Senegal). These new designations follow earlier sanctions against four other judges and the ICC prosecutor,” reads a statement. “These sanctions constitute a blatant attack on the independence of an impartial judicial institution operating under the mandate of 125 States Parties worldwide. They also affront the States Parties to the Court, the international rules-based order, and, above all, millions of innocent victims globally.” The statement continues, “As previously affirmed by the ICC President, the judiciary, and the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute, the Court firmly supports its staff and victims of unimaginable atrocities. The ICC will continue its mandate steadfastly, fully respecting the legal framework adopted by the States Parties, regardless of any restrictions, pressures, or threats.” The Court calls on States Parties and all who share the values of humanity and the rule of law to provide firm and continuous support to the Court and its work done exclusively in the interest of victims of international crimes.
