Yemen, Israeli airstrike on Sanaa in response to Houthi

Cairo (Egypt), Aug. 24 (LaPresse/AP) – Israeli airstrikes hit Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, after Iran-backed rebels fired cluster bombs toward Israel on Friday. The al-Masirah channel, run by the Houthi rebels, reported the attacks, which are the first to hit rebel-held Sanaa since August 17, when Israel stated it had targeted energy infrastructure it believed was used by the rebels. An Israeli Air Force official, speaking anonymously, said that the missile fired from Yemen to Israel on Friday night was a cluster munition and represents a new threat. It is the first time Houthi rebels have launched a cluster bomb against Israel since the Iran-backed group began firing rockets toward Israel in 2023, the official said, explaining that the use of cluster bombs makes interception by Israel more difficult and also shows an additional technology provided to the Houthis by Iran.
