Milano, August 26 (LaPresse) – A year ago, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of the far-left French party La France Insoumise (LFI), presented a motion to impeach President Emmanuel Macron. Today, he announced that on September 23 they will once again present not only a motion of no confidence—which he believes will likely be useless since the government will have already fallen by then—but also a motion for Macron’s removal. Mélenchon argues that Macron must leave because he is “the cause” of the serious political and economic crisis France is experiencing.
This statement follows Prime Minister François Bayrou’s announcement of a confidence vote for his government on September 8 before the National Assembly, convened in extraordinary session. Bayrou’s move comes as his government’s budget faces strong opposition. Major opposition groups—the far-right led by Marine Le Pen (Rassemblement National), Mélenchon’s far-left (LFI), and the Greens—have already stated they will not support the government.
Mélenchon described Bayrou’s decision to take responsibility for his government as “dignified” but stressed that the true culprit must be held accountable. According to him, Bayrou is not responsible for the current situation; rather, it is those who preceded him, particularly Macron, due to their “poor economic policies and management.” Therefore, he reiterated that the true culprit is the President of the Republic. Political tension remains high in France, with a possible government collapse and a sharp confrontation between the majority and opposition.
