Kabul (Afghanistan), 1 September (LaPresse/AP) – The earthquake that destroyed numerous villages in eastern Afghanistan killed at least 620 people and injured more than 1,300, according to a Taliban government spokesperson. The 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck a number of towns in Kunar province, near the city of Jalalabad, in the neighbouring province of Nangahar on Sunday evening, causing extensive damage. Footage from Nangarhar shows people frantically digging through the rubble with their hands, searching for loved ones in the middle of the night. The injured were pulled out of collapsed buildings on stretchers and transported by helicopter. The 11:47 p.m. earthquake had its epicentre 27 kilometres east-northeast of the city of Jalalabad in Nangarhar province, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The depth was only 8 kilometres. Numerous aftershocks followed.
