Vietnam: at least 19 dead from Typhoon Bualoi

Hanoi (Vietnam), 30 September. (LaPresse/AP) – Heavy rains caused by Typhoon Bualoi have triggered new floods and landslides in Vietnam, bringing the death toll to 19. According to reports today from the national meteorological agency, more than 30 centimetres of rain have fallen in some areas of Vietnam in the last 24 hours. The agency has warned that heavy rainfall will continue. Rivers swollen by torrential rains and dam discharges have caused widespread flooding and landslides in the north, cutting off roads and isolating communities from the mountains of Son La and Lao Cai provinces to the central province of Nghe An. Many roads in the capital Hanoi were flooded and an alert was issued for the swelling of the Red River, which runs through the city. Authorities are still searching for 13 missing people, including eight fishermen. Bualoi has already caused at least 20 deaths in the Philippines since Friday, before reaching Vietnam yesterday.
