Brussels, 6 October (LaPresse) – "The world is in the most precarious and dangerous state it has been in for decades. And Europe is on high alert. From reckless incursions into airspace to attempts at economic coercion. From ruthless attacks on Ukraine to direct threats to our own security. Europe is threatened from the East. It is challenged from within. And for the Global South, our next moves are under close scrutiny." This was stated by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in her speech to the European Parliament plenary session on the motions of no confidence tabled by the Left and the Patriots. ‘As we saw at the recent United Nations General Assembly, the existing international order is threatened by faster-than-expected fragmentation,’ she continued. "What I want to emphasise here is that we are in a period of maximum uncertainty and explosive volatility. This chaotic and threatening landscape was the reason why I began my State of the Union address by saying that “Europe is fighting” . And that is why I called for unity that day. Today, I wish to reiterate my commitment to working with all of you to maintain that unity – within this Parliament, between Member States and between our institutions, he emphasises. The point of this unity is not necessarily to agree on every detail – in fact, tension and debate are an integral and important part of the decision-making process.
