Russia, media: Putin fears a coup d'état

Milan, October 26 (LaPresse) – Russian President Vladimir Putin fears a coup d'état. This was reported by The Telegraph, which states that the Russian security service (FSB) recently accused Mikhail Khodorkovsky, who now lives in London, and 22 members of the Russian Anti-War Committee of preparing a coup. According to the intelligence services, the committee, created to oppose Russia's war against Ukraine, is allegedly planning a "violent power takeover and the overthrow of the constitutional order." Experts describe this as a manifestation of Putin’s new sense of vulnerability. "The Kremlin is paranoid. Putin is looking for enemies to strengthen his regime," said former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine John Herbst. Khodorkovsky responded by saying that the FSB’s accusations reflect the Kremlin’s fear of a power transfer: there is no obvious successor if Putin were to die. In early 2023, Wagner militia leader Yevgeny Prigozhin attempted to march on Moscow to seize power, but the revolt failed, and Prigozhin died a couple of months later in a plane crash.
