Philippines: Super Typhoon Fung-wong threatens country, nearly one million evacuated

Manila, 9 Nov. (LaPresse/AP) – Super Typhoon Fung-wong, the largest storm to threaten the Philippines this year, began to hit the country's north-eastern coast before making landfall on Sunday, causing power outages, forcing the evacuation of nearly one million people and prompting the defence chief to urge many more to evacuate high-risk villages before it was too late. Fung-wong, which could cover two-thirds of the Southeast Asian archipelago with a 1,600-kilometre-wide front of rain and wind, approached from the Pacific as the Philippines is still dealing with the devastation caused by Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed at least 224 people in the central provinces of the island on Tuesday before hitting Vietnam.
