London (United Kingdom), 10 November (LaPresse) – In a letter to staff at the British broadcaster BBC, Director-General Tim Davie said after his resignation that ‘some mistakes were made and, as Director-General, I must take ultimate responsibility’. Davie added that leaving his job at the BBC after five years ‘is entirely my decision.’ He stressed that he is ‘working with the Board to agree on a precise timeline to allow for an orderly transition to my successor in the coming months.’ News director Deborah Turness, who also resigned, said the controversy over the documentary on US President Donald Trump, which was misleadingly edited by the broadcaster, ‘has reached a stage where it is damaging the BBC, an institution I love. As CEO of BBC News and Current Affairs, the responsibility falls on me.’ ‘In public life, leaders must be fully accountable, and that is why I am resigning,’ she wrote in a note to staff, ‘although mistakes have been made, I want to be absolutely clear: recent allegations that BBC News is institutionally biased are wrong.’
