Ukraine, Berlin: ‘Macron-Putin? No doubt about European unity’

Frankfurt (Germany), 22 Dec. (LaPresse) – ‘We have no concerns that European unity on the war in Ukraine could be undermined. There is no doubt about our common position.’ This was stated by German government spokesman Steffen Meyer at a press conference, responding to questions about a possible phone call between French President Emmanuel Macron and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Berlin, he explained, ‘has taken note of the signs of willingness to engage in dialogue’ that have emerged. The priority remains ‘to act as Europeans in a united manner,’ a goal on which ‘Chancellor Friedrich Merz has invested a great deal of time, political capital and energy’ in recent weeks. The spokesperson specified that, at the moment, there is no confirmed phone call and that there is nothing to announce even regarding the possible involvement of the German Chancellor. Berlin's priority remains to preserve a unified European line towards Russia, built in part thanks to the diplomatic work carried out in recent weeks.
