Iran, activists: ‘At least 97 confessions extracted from protesters by force’

Jerusalem, 14 Jan. (LaPresse/AP) – According to the US news agency Human Rights Activists News Agency, since 28 December, when protests began in Iran, Iranian state media have broadcast at least 97 confessions from protesters, many of whom express remorse for their actions. They are shown handcuffed, with their faces blurred. The confession videos are accompanied by dramatic background music and interspersed with footage that appears to show protesters attacking security forces. Some show homemade weapons that authorities say were used in the attacks. Others highlight suspects in grainy security footage as they appear to set fires or destroy property. Activists say that, based on the testimony of former detainees, confessions often follow psychological or physical torture and can have serious consequences, including the death penalty.
