Nobel Committee to Machado: ‘The prize cannot be shared, not even symbolically’

Milan, 18 January (LaPresse) – "A winner cannot share the prize with others, nor transfer it once it has been announced. A Nobel Peace Prize can never be revoked. The decision is final and valid forever.‘ This is what we read in a note from the Nobel Foundation, after Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Corina Machado said she had given her medal to US President Donald Trump. ’A Nobel Peace Prize winner receives two central symbols of the prize: a gold medal and a diploma. In addition, the prize money is awarded separately. Regardless of what may happen to the medal, diploma or prize money, it is and remains the original winner who is recorded in history as the recipient of the prize,‘ the statement reads, ’even if the medal or diploma subsequently comes into the possession of someone else, this does not change the identity of the Nobel Peace Prize laureate." ‘The Norwegian Nobel Committee does not consider it its task to comment daily on the Nobel Peace Prize laureates or the political processes in which they are involved,’ the Nobel Committee states, ‘the prize is awarded on the basis of the contributions made by the laureate at the time the committee makes its decision.’
