Strasbourg (France), 20 January (LaPresse) – "Greenland is strategically important. That is no secret. Important submarine routes are located nearby, and critical raw materials crucial to the global economy lie beneath it. But let's be clear: Greenland belongs to its people. No threats or tariffs can change that. Its sovereignty is not for sale." This was stated by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, in her speech during the plenary debate on Greenland. ‘The European Union undoubtedly stands alongside Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark in defending their territorial integrity and sovereignty; President Trump's statements on Saturday create a situation we have never experienced before. Our response must be to remain calm, stand our ground and act in unity,’ she remarked. "The EU is a close and reliable partner for Greenland. Our cooperation is producing concrete results, especially in terms of education, skills and sustainable development. The European Commission has also proposed to double our financial support to Greenland in the next EU multiannual budget. The leaders of Greenland and Denmark have been absolutely clear: the future of Greenland belongs only to its people, who must decide alone, not the United States. Denmark and Greenland have entered into direct talks, which is what responsible allies do. But the tone of these talks is important, and threats made outside of them, let me be very clear, will not be threats to push Denmark to give up Greenland," he stresses.
