West Bank, Israeli ambassador summoned to the Foreign Ministry: ‘We will investigate the Carabinieri incident’

Rome, 26 January. (LaPresse) – Israel's ambassador to Italy, Jonathan Peled, was summoned to the Foreign Ministry this afternoon, following a decision by Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, after a serious incident involving two Carabinieri officers on duty at the Italian Consulate General in Jerusalem, who were stopped by an individual linked to the settler community, who threatened them with an automatic weapon. The two Carabinieri were engaged in institutional activities in Palestinian territory, near Ramallah. The Foreign Ministry emphasised that Italy's “strong disappointment and harsh protest over what happened” was expressed to the Israeli ambassador. It was reiterated that the incident was particularly serious, also in light of the role played by the Carabinieri and the operational context in which they found themselves. The opportunity was taken to reiterate the government's concern about the behaviour of violent settlers in the West Bank, in line with what Minister Tajani had reminded his Israeli counterpart during numerous talks. Ambassador Peled, explains the Foreign Ministry, ‘expressed regret for the incident and indicated that his government would carry out the appropriate investigations into what happened’.
