Munich (Germany), 15 February (LaPresse) – The EU is ‘not ready’ to offer Ukraine a date for accession to the bloc at this stage. This was stated by Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics during his speech at the Munich Security Conference. Rinkevics said he ‘understands that we need Ukraine in the European Union,’ but speaking with other EU leaders, he has ‘the feeling that at this point, as we speak here in Munich in February, there is no willingness to agree on a date.’ The EU wants to see Ukraine join ‘as soon as possible’, but it has to address two other issues as part of this process. Rinkevics believes that the EU ‘must look to the Western Balkans’, as the European Union ‘has lost all credibility in the region’ by failing to make progress on its accession prospects. ‘We have promised so many things in exchange for reforms, such as the name change of North Macedonia. We have been promising them accession for so long,’ the Latvian president said, adding that the EU cannot forget Moldova.
