Ukraine, Orban responds to Costa: ‘No agreement with Kiev unless the oil pipeline is restarted’

Brussels, 24 February (LaPresse) – "The facts are clear: there are no technical obstacles to resuming oil transfers through the Druzhba pipeline to Hungary. All that is needed is a political decision by Ukraine. As you know, I am one of the most disciplined and consistent members of the European Council. I fully understand your concerns. But you also surely see the absurdity of the situation: we make a financially favourable decision for Ukraine that I personally disapprove of, then Ukraine creates an energy emergency in Hungary, and you ask me to pretend that nothing has happened. This is not possible. I am unable to support any decision favourable to Ukraine until it returns to normal." This was written by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in his reply to European Council President Antonio Costa, who yesterday reprimanded him for vetoing the €90 billion loan to Kiev agreed upon by the European Council in December. "When leaders reach a consensus, they are bound by their decision. Any violation of this commitment constitutes a violation of the principle of loyal cooperation. No Member State can be allowed to undermine the credibility of decisions taken collectively by the European Council," Costa warned.
