Iran, Madrid: “We do not fear reprisals from Trump, they would lead to nothing”

Madrid (Spain), Mar. 12 (LaPresse) – “We do not fear” reprisals from U.S. President Donald Trump; “actions against Spain would lead to nothing.” This was stated by Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares in an interview with public TV channel TVE, after the tycoon yesterday again threatened to cut commercial ties with Madrid. Albares emphasized that “Spain is a free and sovereign country that makes decisions independently” but is also a “supportive partner, a reliable NATO ally, and a first-rate trading partner” for the U.S. “Why would they take action against us? It would make no sense; it would be a world upside down, of absolute chaos and disorder,” he commented. Albares also agreed with Trump that Spaniards are fantastic people and reminded that “the trade policy of EU countries is a common policy, under the competence of the European Commission, which has already stated clearly that any attempt at commercial aggression” against one country “is an attack on the entire single market.” “Many countries have expressed their solidarity with us,” the foreign minister added. Albares further stated that U.S.-Spain relations benefit both sides and that the government continues to work to maintain this. He also noted that the U.S. has a trade surplus with Spain, that Madrid is a major buyer of U.S. LNG, and that for years the U.S. has used two bases, Rota and Morón, free of charge on Spanish territory.
