Iran, France: ‘Plan to escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz is being finalised’

Milan, 9 April (LaPresse/AP) – French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot has stated that France, together with European and non-European partners, is ‘finalising’ a plan to establish a mission to escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz, as soon as the fighting has effectively ceased. “Planning for this mission is currently being finalised between French military officials and the countries that have volunteered,” said Barrot, speaking on France Inter radio. According to the minister, shipping traffic will likely be able to pass through the strait safely once an agreement has been reached and “with an escort system” in place. “Preparations are well advanced” to implement the mission “once calm has been fully restored”, he added. Yesterday, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that around 15 countries are ready to participate in the initiative.
