Djibouti, Guelleh re-elected president for sixth term with 97.8%

Mogadishu (Somalia), Apr. 11 (LaPresse) – Djibouti’s President Ismail Omar Guelleh has been re-elected for a sixth term with 97.81% of the vote in Friday’s elections, according to official results. Guelleh, 78, has been in power for over two decades in the small Horn of Africa country, which has around one million inhabitants. He faced a single challenger, Mohamed Farah Samatar, a former member of the ruling party, in a contest that analysts say offered little real competition. Opposition groups often boycott the vote, denouncing restrictions on political freedoms.
