Lebanon, Hezbollah: ‘We will not honour any agreements resulting from the Beirut-Israel talks in the US’

Beirut (Lebanon), 14 Apr. (LaPresse/AP) – Hezbollah will not honour any agreement that may emerge from the direct talks between Lebanon and Israel scheduled for today in the United States, negotiations to which it is firmly opposed. This was stated by Wafiq Safa, a senior member of Hezbollah’s Political Council, in an interview with the Associated Press on the eve of the talks. Hezbollah “is neither interested in nor concerned about” these talks, Safa told the AP. It will be the first time in decades that envoys from Lebanon and Israel, which do not have diplomatic relations, have met face-to-face in direct talks. “As for the outcome of these negotiations between Lebanon and the Israeli enemy, they do not interest or concern us in the slightest,” Safa told the Associated Press. “We are not bound by whatever they agree upon,” he added. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will host a meeting in Washington on Tuesday between the ambassadors of Israel and Lebanon to launch direct negotiations between the two countries. This is reported by Axios. The talks, which will take place against the backdrop of clashes between Israel and Hezbollah and a large-scale Israeli ground incursion into southern Lebanon, will focus on the possibility of a ceasefire and the long-term disarmament of Hezbollah, as well as a peace agreement between the two countries, according to sources.
