EU, von der Leyen: ‘App for age verification on social media is ready’

Milan, 15 April (LaPresse) – The European app for online age verification is here. The announcement was made in Brussels by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who explained that the system, which has already been tested in five Member States including Italy, is technically ready and will soon be available to the public. The app will allow users to prove their age to access digital platforms, whilst ensuring anonymity and maximum privacy protection, without sharing personal data. It is simple to use: download it, link it to an ID document and use it on any device. The project is also open source and may be adopted by partner countries. Von der Leyen emphasised the urgency of protecting children online: today, one in six is a victim of cyberbullying. Platforms, she said, are addictive and do not foster young people’s development. “It is up to parents to educate their children, not social media,” concluded the President of the European Commission.
