US: Fugees rapper “Pras” begins serving 14-year sentence

Safford (Arizona, US), 2 May (LaPresse/AP) – Rapper Prakazrel Michel, known as “Pras” of the Fugees, has reported to prison to begin serving his 14-year sentence, following his conviction on charges of illegally channelling millions of dollars in foreign contributions to former President Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign. A spokeswoman reported that Michel reported to prison on Thursday and federal records list him as being held in a low-security prison in Arizona. “Today is a painful day for Pras, his family and all those who believe in a fair justice system. Pras is respecting the legal process by reporting to begin serving his sentence,” said Erica Dumas, Michel’s spokesperson, adding that his legal team is still contesting the charges. “This chapter is difficult, but it is not the last,” she added. Michel was one of the founding members of the Fugees alongside childhood friends Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean; the group won two Grammy Awards and sold tens of millions of albums.
