Frankfurt (Germany), 4 May (LaPresse) – The driver of the car that ploughed into a group of pedestrians in the centre of Leipzig, killing at least two people and injuring others, has been arrested. This was announced by the Mayor of Leipzig, Burkhard Jung. “The police have arrested the suspected perpetrator,” said Jung, as reported by Bild. According to the mayor, there is no longer any threat to public safety in Leipzig. “A car struck several people on Grimmaische Straße,” said the Leipzig police. The driver initially fled the scene of the accident but was subsequently arrested: “The driver has been arrested and is no longer considered a threat,” the police added. ‘We are devastated. All I can do now is express my sympathy to the families of the victims. Everything else will now depend on the work of the police and the investigating authorities,’ said Mayor Jung.
