Milan, May 8 (LaPresse) – “No, I have no intention of stepping aside and throwing the country into chaos.” British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said this when asked whether he intended to resign following the results emerging from yesterday’s local elections. Asked whether he would still be prime minister at the next general election, Starmer reiterated: “Yes, I was elected for a five-year mandate. I intend to see it through.” Starmer said the results “hurt” and took responsibility for them, while adding that “days like this do not weaken my determination to deliver the change I promised, they strengthen my determination to do so.” Starmer recalled Labour’s landslide victory in the July 2024 general election: “I led our party to that victory, which represents a five-year mandate to change the country.” “We have taken a series of decisions that were right in terms of stabilizing the economy, investing in our public services and not being dragged into war with Iran, but we have also made unnecessary mistakes and my task now is to define the measures we will take to deliver the change that people want and deserve,” the prime minister continued. “We were elected to face these challenges and that is what we will do,” he concluded.
