Ebola: new outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, 246 suspected cases and 65 deaths

Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of Congo), 15 May (LaPresse/AP) – The Africa CDC (Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention), the main public health body on the African continent, today confirmed a new Ebola outbreak in Ituri province, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with 246 suspected cases and 65 deaths recorded so far. The deaths and suspected cases have been recorded mainly in the Mongwalu and Rwampara health zones, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention reported, specifying that ‘four deaths have been reported among the laboratory-confirmed cases’ and that ‘suspected cases have also been reported in Bunia, pending confirmation’. The Ebola virus is highly contagious and can be contracted through bodily fluids such as vomit, blood or semen. The disease it causes is rare but severe, and often fatal. The latest Ebola outbreak comes five months after the last Ebola epidemic in Congo was declared over following 43 deaths.
