Bunia (Democratic Republic of the Congo), 20 May (LaPresse/AP) – The World Health Organisation (WHO) has stated that the risk of the Ebola virus spreading in the Congo and Uganda is high at national and regional level, but low globally. The WHO has declared the Ebola outbreak a public health emergency of international concern, requiring a coordinated response. So far, 51 cases have been confirmed in the northern Congolese provinces of Ituri and North Kivu, as well as two in Uganda, said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. In addition to these, there are 139 suspected deaths and nearly 600 suspected cases, he added. “We know that the scale of the outbreak is much wider,” he said, “we expect those numbers to continue to rise.” In Bunia, the site of the first known death, schools and churches remained open today and some residents were wearing face masks in the streets.
