Milan, 20 May (LaPresse) – During today’s meeting at the Foreign Ministry – where Israel’s Ambassador to Italy, Jonathan Peled, was summoned by the Foreign Ministry’s Secretary-General, Ambassador Riccardo Guariglia, on the instructions of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani – in addition to “expressing the Italian Government’s firm protest regarding the incident involving Italian citizens on the Freedom Flotilla”, it was “emphasised, as already stated today by Minister Tajani, that the Italian Government reserves the right to consider the most appropriate political measures to be taken, including at European level”. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported this in a statement, adding in particular that Guariglia “reiterated, on the instructions of Minister Tajani, the unacceptability of what had happened, particularly given that the citizens involved were unarmed and had no violent intentions” and that “the seriousness of the intervention in international waters was also highlighted, and strong indignation was expressed at the images circulated in recent hours”. ‘The Foreign Ministry continues to monitor the case with the utmost attention, in constant contact with the Italian Embassy in Tel Aviv and with the Israeli authorities, to ensure the fullest assistance to the Italian nationals involved and to facilitate their swift and safe return,’ the statement concludes.
