China: explosion in a coal mine, over 80 dead

At least 82 people have died following a gas explosion in a coal mine in Shanxi province, northern China. Several people have been injured and others are still missing. This is according to the China Daily, citing local sources. At the time of the incident, which occurred yesterday at 7.29 pm, there were 247 miners underground. By 6 am this morning, 201 miners had been rescued, whilst rescue operations were still underway. The managers of the company involved have been arrested by the police, according to a statement from the rescue headquarters.
