Milan, 27 May (LaPresse) – Christophe Ingrain, Nicolas Sarkozy’s lawyer, today denounced the “grotesque fabrication” regarding Libyan funding of the former French president’s election campaign. Today was devoted to the closing arguments of Nicolas Sarkozy’s defence in his appeal trial on the case, with the verdict expected on 30 November. ‘For thirteen years we have searched, conducted investigations in France, Switzerland, Libya and Lebanon, questioned and arrested people, examined bank accounts and analysed diaries,’ said Ingrain, ‘for thirteen years we have tried to substantiate the case. For thirteen years we have tried to implicate Nicolas Sarkozy in this grotesque affair.’ “None of these acts were committed directly by Nicolas Sarkozy. We are told that he was the instigator because he had an interest in receiving these Libyan funds. But alleged interest is not proof! Where is the order?”, he added, as reported by the broadcaster Bfmtv. “Allowing does not mean doing. You cannot convict on the basis of a hypothesis,‘ he concluded, emphasising that in the prosecution’s arguments there is ’not even a shred of an attempt to prove anything".
