Madrid (Spain), May 27 (LaPresse) – Spain’s Transport Minister, Socialist Óscar Puente, stated that officers from the Central Operational Unit (UCO) of the Guardia Civil went to the PSOE headquarters in Madrid for a “simple request for information” and not with a search warrant, and he criticised how Spanish media reported the news. Spain’s public broadcaster RTVE said, citing informed sources, that although the UCO operation began with requests for information at the PSOE headquarters, it could lead to searches. Puente also complained about the deployment of the UCO to request information. “Is it really necessary to send the UCO? It’s incredible,” he commented. The officers are still on Calle Ferraz. The request, according to Cadena SER, was issued by investigating judge Santiago Pedraz as part of an inquiry into a case known as the “SEPI case,” involving former Socialist activist Leire Díez, who is suspected of orchestrating an operation targeting judges, prosecutors and other individuals involved in cases such as those concerning the Prime Minister Sánchez’s brother and his wife, Begoña Gómez. According to Cadena SER, the UCO is also reportedly searching the homes of former Socialist leaders Gaspar Zarrías and Santos Cerdán, as well as businessman Javier Pérez Dolset, an associate of Díez.
