Washington (USA), May 27 (LaPresse) – JD Vance praised Pope Leo XIV for the new encyclical dedicated to Artificial Intelligence. “What I have read of it seems very profound to me; it is exactly the kind of intervention one would expect and hope to receive from a leader of the Church,” the US vice president said in a phone interview with NBC News. “New technologies and new forms of warfare are emerging, therefore it is necessary to update the doctrine of ‘Just War’,” Vance added. “New ways in which human beings interact with one another are emerging; consequently, it is necessary in some sense to rethink the entire Catholic social doctrine in light of the new world we live in. And I believe that this is exactly the Pope’s intention. So I am pleased that he has embarked on this path,” the American vice president said.
The discussion then shifted to the name Prevost chose as Pope. “I am really happy that he chose the name Leo XIV. I think it was a clear reference to Leo XIII, who became Pope at the beginning of the industrial era,” he explained. “I think Leo XIV is becoming Pope at the beginning of the AI era, and I suspect that if we are able to get through it successfully, it will largely be because the Pope and the Church are able to provide the kind of moral guidance we need,” Vance concluded.
