Milan, 5 June (LaPresse) – ‘A localised ceasefire, brokered by the IAEA, came into effect today on the front line near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, paving the way for crucial repairs to the power line to avert the risk of a nuclear accident’. The International Atomic Energy Agency announced this on X. ‘In the coming days, under the supervision of IAEA experts, technicians from both sides will begin repairing the war damage to the 750-kilovolt (kV) Dniprovska power line, following extensive demining operations in the area,’ the post continues. Director General Rafael Grossi states that ‘the Russian Federation and Ukraine have cooperated constructively with the IAEA during weeks of delicate and complex talks, and that both sides have agreed to a ceasefire for nuclear safety’. ‘The IAEA will continue to do everything possible to help protect people and the environment from the risk of a nuclear accident, which would benefit no one and would only exacerbate the devastation and suffering caused by the war,’ concludes Grossi.
