Iran, Tajani: ‘We are rooting for an agreement and are open to an international mission’

Rome, 12 June (LaPresse) – "We are rooting for this and doing everything in our power, from a political standpoint, to ensure this agreement is reached, which will then allow the Strait of Hormuz to be fully reopened and guarantee freedom of navigation. I reiterate our willingness to be part of an international mission, whilst a truce and ceasefire are in place, to guarantee freedom of navigation, including the clearance of mines in the Gulf. Two of our minesweepers are already in the area as part of the Aspides mission and are therefore ready to intervene.” This was stated by Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani on the sidelines of the Conference of Italian Consuls at the Farnesina. “When there is an international mission under the flag of the UN, the European Union or another international body, we will be there,” the minister added. ‘Not alone, because we believe in multilateralism and at this moment joint action by several countries is needed to guarantee freedom of navigation, which is fundamental for economic growth. Not only with regard to oil,’ concluded the Foreign Minister, ‘but also with regard to fertilisers, which are crucial for African agriculture and equally important for agriculture in European countries.’
