Switzerland: the result of the referendum on capping the population at 10 million will be announced tomorrow

Geneva (Switzerland), 13 June (LaPresse/AP) – Swiss voters are being asked to decide on an unprecedented proposal to cap Switzerland’s population at 10 million in a referendum, the results of which are expected tomorrow. The proposal is backed by the Swiss People’s Party, which holds a majority of seats in parliament and has for years thrived by fuelling an isolationist trend in Switzerland. A recent poll by the agency gfs.bern suggested it could be a close contest. “Yes” campaigners object to the influx of expatriates from the European Union and argue that Switzerland’s infrastructure, housing, social programmes, natural resources and way of life have been stretched to the limit by population growth. “No” campaigners, on the other hand, argue that a ‘yes’ vote would be tantamount to self-harm, contending that Switzerland benefits from closer ties with the EU and obtains the necessary labour, skills and expertise from foreign nationals in sectors such as healthcare, finance, the pharmaceutical industry and technology.
