Milan, 15 June (LaPresse/AP) – A Russian attack has caused extensive damage to the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, said Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Military Administration of the City of Kyiv, accusing Russia of deliberately striking ‘the heart of one of the greatest Christian shrines’. The roof of the Dormition Cathedral caught fire during the night-time attack, said Metropolitan Epifaniy, head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. He condemned the attack as yet another Russian crime “against humanity, against history, against Christianity” and called for prayers to save the site. The Kiev Caves Monastery (Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra) is a vast complex of monasteries and churches, some of which are underground, built between the 11th and 19th centuries. Some of the churches on this site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are connected by a labyrinth of caves stretching over 600 metres. The cathedral, churches and other buildings overlook the right bank of the Dnipro River and have been a pilgrimage destination for centuries.
