Rome, May 16 (LaPresse) – During a meeting with the company this morning, it was announced that up to 70% of workers in some departments will be placed on furlough (CIG – cassa integrazione guadagni). This was reported by the FIM, FIOM, and UIL trade unions at the former Ilva plant in Taranto, who strongly condemned “the unilateral actions taken in recent hours by the company’s management.”

The unions criticized the company for proceeding “without any prior consultation with the social partners,” and for directly informing departments of the number of workers who will be placed on furlough starting next week.

“In some departments, the percentage of personnel involved reaches alarming levels, up to 70%, in open violation of the provisions laid out in the Ministerial Decree on the matter and of the signed Extraordinary Wage Support Agreement (CIGS),” they wrote.

“These provisions explicitly exclude from suspension workers involved in maintenance and surveillance activities, as well as those engaged in tasks directly connected to safety and environmental protection when specifically assigned to maintenance programs,” the unions stated. “The company has therefore arbitrarily and unilaterally implemented a suspension plan that seriously risks undermining the continuity of maintenance operations, and consequently, the functionality and safety of the plants, in breach of the commitments made in the restart plan.”
