Rome, 22 October (LaPresse) – ‘We believe that there is a crisis of democracy in our country, made evident by the fact that around half of citizens no longer vote. On the other hand, the crisis of democracy stems precisely from the exploitation of labour that has been determined.’ These were the words of Maurizio Landini, Secretary General of the CGIL trade union, speaking on the sidelines of a press conference at the national headquarters in Rome. "When you are poor despite working, it means that something is not working and that it is exactly the opposite of what our Constitution says. On the other hand, I believe that it is clear to everyone that this is also an explicit propaganda operation that is moving towards a fairly authoritarian logic. We see this in the media, we see it in relation to the judiciary, we see it in relation to the world of work, when precariousness is not combated, when wages continue to be low and when there is no willingness to go and get the money where it is in order to make investments in public health, schools, education and, of course, work. And it is precisely we who are calling for mobilisation because, as far as we are concerned, democracy is defended by practising it, and I believe it is clear to everyone that there is a problem and a crisis in our democracy today.
