Milan, 8 March (LaPresse) – ‘The wave of fuel price increases continues across Italy, with petrol now exceeding €1.8 per litre at self-service stations in several areas of the country and diesel at service stations on motorways heading towards €2.6 per litre at some stations.’ This was reported by Codacons, which has been monitoring price trends at petrol stations for days. Today, in five Italian regions, the average price of petrol at self-service stations exceeded €1.80 per litre: Basilicata (€1.812), Calabria (€1.820), Sicily (€1.805), Valle d'Aosta (€1.807), the province of Bolzano (€1.819) and the province of Trento (€1.805). The average price of self-service diesel has reached the psychological threshold of €2 per litre in Bolzano, €1.992 in Trento, €1.989 in Calabria, €1.985 in Valle d'Aosta and €1.984 in Sicily. Looking at the motorway network, the number of service stations selling diesel above £2.50 per litre is increasing, with prices in some cases approaching £2.60 per litre, such as on the A4 or A28, where diesel currently costs £2.572 per litre. The government must accept our request and immediately cut fuel excise duties by at least 15 euro cents per litre,' says Codacons. “Such a measure, considering also the VAT applied to excise duties, would not only bring prices back to pre-crisis levels with direct benefits on refuelling costs, but would also keep the prices of transported products under control, especially food, which, as is well known, is affected by diesel price increases, considering that over 80% of goods sold in Italy are transported by road,” concludes the association.
