Rome, 14 March (LaPresse) – Today, Glovo and Deliveroo delivery riders are gathering in over 30 squares across the country as part of a national protest organised by the CGIL trade union, from Rome to Naples, Palermo, Bologna, Milan and Florence, to demand decent wages, job security and tangible rights. Denouncing “extreme” working conditions is the CGIL’s confederal secretary, Francesca Re David, who, speaking from the rally in Rome’s Piazza Re di Roma, highlights how “for the majority of delivery riders, food delivery is their main job, with very intense shifts: 6–7 days a week, 7–10 hours a day and more than 8 deliveries a day in 62% of cases”. “Wages,” continues the confederal secretary, “are below the dignity threshold. Average pay,” she emphasises, “remains very low, between 2 and 4 euros per delivery, with no allowance for waiting times or expenses incurred, to the extent that over half of riders refuse low-paying deliveries.” “These figures,” adds Re David, “confirm the urgent need to implement the national Goods and Logistics contract and to recognise paid holidays, sick leave, paid accident leave, the thirteenth and fourteenth month’s salary, severance pay, as well as greater guarantees regarding health and safety.”
